Questions to Ask Before Hiring an HVAC Company

Inspecting old ac unit

Every day, homeowners hire companies to replace old AC systems—and often are unhappy with the results. These companies may promise the lowest price, but ultimately provide sub-par quality for what they charge. All homeowners learn, often the hard way, that simply choosing the least expensive option may actually be more expensive over time. For example, an improperly installed HVAC system will underperform and ultimately require expensive repairs or need to be replaced sooner than one that was properly installed.

But how do you know which company will charge you fairly and provide quality installation services? By doing your homework.

Once you’ve determined that your AC system isn’t working properly and it needs replaced, the next step is finding a quality HVAC company that you can trust, assuming you don’t already have one.

There are obvious questions that any company should be able to answer for you:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • What are your guarantees and what EXACTLY do they cover?
  • How much will it cost me?
  • Do you have any testimonials you can show me?

And you should ask these questions. But you need to go further than this to understand the type of service you’ll be getting from each company.

1. What kind of training and experience does the salesperson have who will be preparing the quote?

It is important to understand the training and full technical qualifications of the person quoting the installation services. Many companies have a sales team of individuals who aren’t qualified technicians.

2. What is and is not included in the quote?

Be sure to understand what is being included in the price. It may be the lowest price quoted, but if doesn’t include new components such as connectors, pipes, fittings, valves, and safety switches that need to be updated to the new system’s specifications, you’ll pay more for expensive repairs and system failure sooner rather than later. Also, be sure a complete installation is quoted, including permits and old system removal.

3. What steps do you take to ensure you are recommending the heating and air conditioning system that will address my needs?

Beware of companies that will provide a quote over the phone or require very little time in your home before handing you a quote. If this is the case, they are simply replacing what is currently there—and that may not be the best option if the previous model was not properly sized for your home. Be sure that the quote is based on your needs as well as your specific home.

4. Which manufacturers do you use? Which manufacturer is best?

Companies that offer only one manufacturer will have limited options available to you. Be sure that you are offered choices and the opportunity to go over the benefits of each.

6. Is your company currently licensed and insured to work in my city? Do you take out permits?

Be sure that the licenses are current and that taking out permits and having the inspections done on the installation work are included. Also, their insurance should be sufficient to cover everyone in case of an accident at the work site. If it isn’t sufficient, you could be liable in the case of an accident. Do your due diligence and ASK.

7. What happens after the installation?

Proper maintenance is vital to keeping a system running efficiently. But did you know that regular maintenance is required by some manufacturers to keep warranties in force? Ask about maintenance plans and service calls so you know what to expect up front.
