Improving Your Air Conditioner’s Efficiency – Part 3

Woman happy her air conditioning is working

There are several different ways to improve your air conditioner’s efficiency. As we enter into the fall season, the Florida heat still affects your ac’s overall performance. Fortunately, the list of improving the efficiency of your AC continues.

Draw the curtains

Drapes aren’t just for decorations. Curtains, drapes, and blinds reduce heat entering into your home during the afternoon hours. There are many different types of curtains that will benefit the regulation of the air flow in your home. Blackout curtains completely block out the sun. Light filtering curtains are great for homeowners who want to lower energy costs while still enjoying the natural light. Light filtering curtains can also be customizable based on fabric, color, and percentage of UV ray coverage. Room darkening curtains do not fully block out the sun like blackout curtains, but the fabric can still block out the UV rays that causes heat to enter your home.

Keep the Condenser Unit Clean

There are a number of things that can affect how the condenser unit operates. It is important to clean on and around the unit. Before you begin cleaning the condenser unit, make sure to turn it off at the outdoor shutoff station. Start by clearing any grass, weeds, or other debris from the unit to ensure there is nothing blocking the air flow. Vacuuming the exterior fins will save you time. Remove the fan by unscrewing the top grill and carefully lift the fan out without tugging on the wires. Wipe the interior and remove any leaves or other particles that may have fallen into the unit. Replace the fan and screw the grill back onto the top of your unit. Hose down any leftover debris left near the unit.

Clear the Drain Line

When moisture is removed from the air, it is then deposited into a small drain pipe located next to the indoor unit. The water then travels to the outdoor unit and is released on the ground. Over time the pipes become clogged with mold, mildew, or algae. In order to prevent this from happening, pour distilled vinegar and baking soda down the pipeline using a funnel. If you noticed that your drain line is clogged, then you may use a dry/wet vacuum to clear out the water and debris stuck in your drain. Don’t forget to clean your drain pipe during your routine maintenance.
